Interspecies Communication In Oral Biofilm
نویسندگان
چکیده
Oral cavity contains large numbers of microorganisms. Dental plaque is composed of bacteria in a matrix of salivary glycoproteins and extracellular polysaccharides which displays extensive interactions while forming biofilm structures, carrying out physiological functions, and inducing microbial pathogenesis. Our emerging view of the microbial world is one in which individual bacteria exert their influence within communities through producing, sensing and responding to an array of chemical signals.

AI-2 of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans inhibits Candida albicans biofilm formation
Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, a Gram-negative bacterium, and Candida albicans, a polymorphic fungus, are both commensals of the oral cavity but both are opportunistic pathogens that can cause oral diseases. A. actinomycetemcomitans produces a quorum-sensing molecule called autoinducer-2 (AI-2), synthesized by LuxS, that plays an important role in expression of virulence factors, in int...
متن کاملInterspecies communication in bacteria.
Until recently, bacteria were considered to live rather asocial, reclusive lives. New research shows that, in fact, bacteria have elaborate chemical signaling systems that enable them to communicate within and between species. One signal, termed AI-2, appears to be universal and facilitates interspecies communication. Many processes, including virulence factor production, biofilm formation, and...
متن کاملSystems biology of Streptococcus mutans for drug development
Streptococcus mutans is a human pathogen highly adapted to the oral cavity and a key component of dental plaque. It has an important role in polymicrobial biofilm diseases like caries, periodontitis and endocarditis, all of which are correlated with systemic non-communicable diseases (arthritis, cardiovascular disease). S. mutans forms strong biofilms, is tolerant to low pH, and has a sophistic...
متن کاملAutoinducer 2-Dependent Escherichia coli Biofilm Formation Is Enhanced in a Dual-Species Coculture
Biofilms in nature typically consist of multiple species, and microbial interactions are likely to have crucial impact on biofilm development, structure and functions. The best understood form of communication within bacterial communities is by means of production, release and detection of signal molecules (autoinducers), known as quorum sensing. Although autoinducers mainly promote intraspecie...
متن کاملBacterial quorum sensing: signals, circuits, and implications for biofilms and disease.
Communication between bacteria, belonging to the same species or to different species, is mediated through different chemical signals that are synthesized and secreted by bacteria. These signals can either be cell-density related (autoinducers) or be produced by bacteria at different stages of growth, and they allow bacteria to monitor their environment and alter gene expression to derive a com...
